Frequently Asked Questions

How do carbon offsets work?

Terrapass carbon offsets neutralize your carbon footprint by funding projects like reforestation, farm power and landfill gas capture, which all remove carbon emissions. Every 1,000 lbs you purchase destroys greenhouse gases equivalent to 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide. That's like taking one car off the road for an entire month.

Where does my money go when I buy a Terrapass carbon offset?

When you buy carbon offsets from Terrapass your purchase is supporting emissions reduction projects in communities across the North America and the world. These projects include reforestation, renewable energy produced by wind power and methane capture at dairy farms, landfills, and abandoned coal mines. Carbon offsets help fund the development and operation of these projects. All Terrapass projects meet the highest standards for quality, monitoring, and independent verification. To learn more about the projects in our current portfolio please visit our projects page.

How does Terrapass ensure that its offset projects are really making a difference?

Terrapass ensures our offsets are making a difference in several ways. Prior to adding a project to our portfolio we perform due diligence to fully understand the impact of each project. Once the project is in our portfolio we monitor and verify all of the emissions reductions that are taking place. Finally all projects in our portfolio must pass the “additionality” test. Additionality refers to the concept of whether your carbon offset purchase really brings about carbon reductions, or whether the reductions would have happened anyway. If the purchase of carbon offsets is a critical factor in making the reductions happen, the reductions are said to be “additional” to the business-as-usual case. By verifying and checking at each step in the process we are committed to making sure our projects are clearing the air.

How do I know my water footprint?

The average person in the US is responsible for nearly 2,000 gallons of water a day and only a small amount runs through our home. Nearly 95 percent of your water footprint is hidden in the food you eat, energy you use, products you buy, and services you rely on. 3 As much as we want to conserve water, we can’t avoid using it thus resulting in a water footprint for each and every one of us. Terrapass recognizes the importance water has in our daily lives, our ecosystem and the effects climate change has on freshwater resources. That is why we have partnered with Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to educate people about endangered waterways and to offer a viable solution for balancing your water footprint through BEF Water Restoration Certificates® (BEF WRCs ®).

Verified by National Fish and Wildlife Foundation?
