Renewable Energy Certificates (One-Time Purchase)

$10.00 per MWh

In an ideal world, we would all have small wind farms in our backyards that generate exactly the amount of energy we need to power our homes. But let’s face it, that’s pretty tough to do. However, anyone can purchase renewable energy credits.  Calculate your personal carbon footprint with our online calculator.

Purchase Personal RECs

Enter the annual US average (11 MWh) for your home’s RECs or check your utility bill for specific usage.

The avg. US household consumes about 11 Megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity / year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do carbon offsets work?

Terrapass carbon offsets neutralize your carbon footprint by funding projects like reforestation, farm power and landfill gas capture, which all remove carbon emissions. Every 1,000 lbs you purchase destroys greenhouse gases equivalent to 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide. That's like taking one car off the road for an entire month.

How do RECS work?

By purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), you are supporting clean energy and displacing emissions associated with fossil fuel powered electric generation. For a one time purchase, we’ve done the calculation for you—the average US household consumes about 11,000 kilowatt hours (kWH), which is the same as 11 Megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually. Where does my money go when I buy a Terrapass carbon offset?

When you buy carbon offsets from Terrapass your purchase is supporting emissions reduction projects in communities across the North America and the world. These projects include reforestation, renewable energy produced by wind power and methane capture at dairy farms, landfills, and abandoned coal mines. Carbon offsets help fund the development and operation of these projects. All Terrapass projects meet the highest standards for quality, monitoring, and independent verification. To learn more about the projects in our current portfolio please visit our projects page.

How does Terrapass ensure that its offset projects are really making a difference?

Terrapass ensures our offsets are making a difference in several ways. Prior to adding a project to our portfolio we perform due diligence to fully understand the impact of each project. Once the project is in our portfolio we monitor and verify all of the emissions reductions that are taking place. Finally all projects in our portfolio must pass the “additionality” test. Additionality refers to the concept of whether your carbon offset purchase really brings about carbon reductions, or whether the reductions would have happened anyway. If the purchase of carbon offsets is a critical factor in making the reductions happen, the reductions are said to be “additional” to the business-as-usual case. By verifying and checking at each step in the process we are committed to making sure our projects are clearing the air.
