Beyond switching off for an hour, Earth Hour has grown to inspire people to pledge to take various other actions for the environment, such as eating vegetarian for the day, or pledging to bike to work a few days a week.
In 2011, Earth hour was effective across 135 countries. Visit their website and click on your location to find events in your area and encourage your friends, family, and work colleagues to attend. You can even challenge your mayor to take action against climate change and compare natural disasters caused by global warming in your state.
As a committed TerraPass employee and environmental steward, I’ve decided to make my Earth Hour celebration a little more exciting than sitting alone in the dark. I’m having some friends over for cocktails by candlelight. I love spending time with my friends, and it will be a great chance to discuss all things eco, from news and environmental policy to organic chocolate and wine. I’ve already taken steps to reduce my impact, such as switching out incandescent light bulbs for CFL’s, and sticking reminders on light switches to remind my guests, roommates (eh hem), and myself to turn the lights off when I leave the room.
I’m also starting to take part in Meatless Mondays by cutting meat out of my diet one day per week for the rest of 2012 in an effort to reduce carbon emissions associated with meat production. As a former vegetarian, I find it an easy change, and you may be surprised how great a meatless meal can be. Here are 30 creative and easy recipes to go meatless without feeling unsatisfied.
