wedding.jpgThe latest addition to the TerraPass product line-up is now crowding the tabs at the top of our web site. Say hello to the new Wedding TerraPass (beta), the new must-have item for your green nuptials.

Why a Wedding TerraPass? Because you asked for it. We get requests for this product all the time.

Why beta? Because we’ve got plans for the product that aren’t yet reflected in the design of the emissions calculator or the gift that comes with the purchase. More to come soon.

Green weddings are increasingly common. Couples want their weddings to be a reflection of their values, which might mean serving organic food, using flowers and ingredients that are local to the event, wearing a dress that can be reused, or any of a number of other ways to cut down on the impact of the event.

But the single biggest environmental impact of a wedding comes from guest travel, particularly via plane. With family and friends spread all over the globe these days, the carbon footprint from an average-sized wedding can easily hit 50 tons or more.

With your Wedding TerraPass comes a fancy certificate of offset for display at the reception (if so desired), including a nice frame to display it in. The frame is handmade from salvaged Douglas fir, and will continue to serve your framing needs long after the blessed event.

It would be a wonderful idea if TerraPass would also provide resources for creating a green wedding, other than carbon trading. I am afraid people will feel good about buying catbon credits and then behave completely environmentally irresponsible (big huge party, lots of dry cleaning, lots of paper, plastic, flowers, you get my drift). How do we make sure this does not happen?

re: Sorina

Terrapass is in the business of carbon offsets, and I think they should stick to focusing on those services and keeping on the cutting edge, etc.

if you’re interested in other ways to green your life check out www.treehugger.com

they even have a resource on greening your wedding http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/04/how-to-green-your-wedding.php

For what it’s worth, Sorina, my small bit of research into this suggests that carbon offsets are the last thing people planning a green wedding usually think of. They are much more likely to use an organic caterer and recycled paper than they are to buy offsets. It’s a little ironic, because the environmental impact of the guest travel is much greater than the impact of the food.

But it would be nice, I agree, to at least provide some links to additional resources for people planning a green wedding. Hopefully as the product expands we will be able to do so.

Congrats on launch!

With the help of the Terrapass team, I’ve figured out how to offset my wedding both for us and our guests. There’s a ton of websites just for green weddings with lots of ideas you can incorporate is you just search on “green weddings”. Like all things wedding, there’s a huge industry to support it. ;P

Yay! We are having a carbon-netural wedding and this will make it a breeze. I’m thrilled about the product extension! Another idea-

Have you thought about partnering with dealerships to “bundle” carbon neutrality with a new car (just like adding rust-proofing, etc). Terra Pass could even negotiate a “spiff” for the sales people ( very common in the industry).

I have more- maybe Terra Pass should hire me for one of those new positions they’re posting for ;)

My wife and I got married by a judge in the San Fransico City Hall 36 years ago. At the time, we lived there. We both walked to our wedding.

Anyone have a greener wedding than that?
