About the Project

Tri-Community is a landfill in northeastern Maine publicly owned by the municipalities of Caribou, Fort Fairfield, and Limestone. Opened in 1977, the landfill is expected to have an additional 30 years of capacity, based on disposal rates of 30,000 to 35,000 tons per year. The project consists of 26 wells that direct the methane gas to an open flare.

In the community

The landfill project not only minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, it also provides odor prevention for the surrounding areas, improvement in air quality such as reductions in volatile organic carbon emissions, additional assurance of improving groundwater quality. The local community benefits from construction and ongoing operations and maintenance jobs associated with the project.
