Via worldchanging, we discovered Oil Standard, a clever Greasemonkey script that converts all prices on a Web page into their equivalent in barrels of oil. The prices fluctuate in real time with the cost of the commodity.
The purpose of the project is to underscore the centrality of oil to our economy. Even if you don’t install the script, it’s well worth checking out the screenshots.
This project spurs lots of related ideas. How about a plugin for Google Maps that tells you how much gas you’ll burn driving between two locations? How about a plugin for Expedia that calculates the carbon cost of that plane flight to Hawaii?
