White Badge PartnerKapohoKine Adventures has reduced up to 200 metric tons of carbon emissions in the current year. Carbon dioxide emissions, the principal cause of global warming, are an inevitable consequence of energy use. Every time an individual or organization uses electricity for lighting, fuel for transport, etc., additional carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere. KapohoKine Adventures has partnered with TerraPass to sponsor clean energy and carbon reduction projects that result in a verified, measurable reduction in carbon emissions.
KapohoKine Adventures emissions reductions2008: 152 metric tons of CO2 reduced About KapohoKine AdventuresKapohoKine Adventures is dedicated to using sustainable tourism to preserve and protect Hawaiian open space and legacy farm holdings while maintaining a carbon-neutral footprint and providing a guest experience that is both sophisticated and luxurious enough to earn Princess Cruises “Best Tour” designation. Small group adventure tours that include the incredible volcanic formations of Kilauea Volcano, lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and the amazing natural beauty of the Big Island of Hawaii. We work to maintain a carbon-neutral footprint operation-wide, and we've done so from day one. We follow EPA guidelines in source reduction and use washable plates and silverware rather than plastic and paper on every tour for every meal to radically reduce our contribution to our island’s solid waste problem. Guides use waterbottles instead of bottled water, and we use washable towels for the cool oshiburis used by guests rather than paper or disposables. And our waterbottles are non-leaching and toxin-free food grade stainless steel from Klean Kanteen, unlike the less expensive polycarbonate and HDPE bottles made from petro-chemicals. We use only rechargeable batteries in our flashlights and equipment. Or we use rechargeable equipment. Reusable serving bowls, platters, and utensils are at every meal on every tour. Once we're past the waste prevention stage, we move to recycling and we recycle everything we can, from the plastic, glass, and aluminum used on the tours to the cardboard and packaging that everything comes in. Our baseyard uses only CFL bulbs. Our vehicles use E85 fuel and are maintained rigorously to maintain proper tire pressures and clean fluids and filters. We are proud partners of TerraPass, earning a White Badge indicating our removal of 152 metric tons of carbon emissions every year. We also ask a guest from each vehicle (maybe 19 or 20 a week) to plant a tree for us at one of our locations making for an additional 20 ton/year carbon absorbed. And our guides carpool to work. |
