Project verification
At Ford and TerraPass we know that you need real proof that you are buying more than just a fancy decal for your vehicle. You want to know that your money is going to make a real reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Good science
We base our project sponsorships on good science. Our advisory board includes two of the world's preeminent climate scientists. Bill Moomaw, Director of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at Tufts, was the lead author on the IPCC's Third Annual Report on Climate Change. Bill Schlesinger, Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University, is an international authority on climate science, with an expertise in forestry and soils.
Transparent organization
TerraPass leads the industry in the transparency of our operations. We are the only such organization that undergoes an independent third-party audit to ensure that our money is spent the way our members want it spent.
Our audit is performed by the Center for Resource Solutions, a leading non-profit in the field of renewable energy, and creator of the Green-e green power certification program. More details below.

Third-party verification by the Center for Resource Solutions
TerraPass is pleased to announce that the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions has agreed to complete a thorough third-party verification of TerraPass sales and purchases, including transaction made through the Greener Miles program.
The verification will address and confirm the following key issues:
- Balance of supply and sales: TerraPass REC and carbon purchases are in balance with our consumer and business sales obligations.
- Carbon content of RECs
- Compliance with Green-e criteria
- Purchases are adequately contracted, documented and have matching attestations.
The verification will include reviews of internal company documents that address customer sales, carbon credit, and REC purchases. The supply will be verified through attestations, contracts, and other documents evidencing the purchase of Green-e certified RECs and through documentation evidencing the purchase and retirement of offsets purchased from the Chicago Climate Exchange. Sales quantities will be verified by examination of internal Terrapass company documents, including sales records, receipts, and any other documentation necessary to substantiate sales.

TerraPass is a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) offset product for vehicles. CO2 is a greenhouse gas (GHG) that contributes to climate change. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, vehicles release about 10,000 pounds of CO2 to the atmosphere per year on average. However, more efficient vehicles emit fewer pounds of CO2 and less efficient vehicles emit more. For each Out of Towner TerraPass purchased, 12,000 lbs of CO2 reductions are purchased and retired on your behalf. TerraPass does not actually reduce the CO2 emissions of your vehicle, but offsets the release of 12,000 lbs of CO2 emissions elsewhere. TerraPass will not prevent the release of or offset the emissions of other pollutants from your vehicle, such as particulate matter, lead and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).This product matches 100% of your vehicle's estimated CO2 annual emissions. This product is comprised of the following mix of RECs and carbon credits: | ||
| Renewable Energy Certificates | ||
|
A REC represents the environmental attributes associated with a unit of renewable electricity. For every unit of renewable electricity generated, an equivalent amount of RECs are created. The purchase of RECs supports renewable electricity generation, which helps offset conventional electricity in the region where the renewable generator is located. RECs can be quantified in tons of CO2 based on regional data provided by the Department of Energy's E-GRID program. |

The Green-e Program certifies that the RECs used in this product meet the minimum environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. A Carbon Credit Offset represents the reduction of one unit of carbon (typically a metric ton) from a baseline scenario or regulatory requirement by an emitting entity. Carbon credits rely on the concept of flexible trading to allow that a market based system directs funding to the lowest marginal cost project areas. Carbon Credits can be generated when a corporation or organization makes a reduction of carbon beyond a baseline scenario. The purchase of Carbon Credits helps support carbon reduction by giving a payment for each unit of carbon reduced beyond a baseline scenario. Where a protocol is available, TerraPass Carbon Credit Offsets are registered, and retired on the Chicago Climate Exchange. |

Additional information about Renewable Energy Certificates
When a renewable energy facility operates, it creates electricity that is delivered into a vast network of transmission wires, often referred to as "the grid." The grid is segmented into regional power pools; in many cases these pools are not interconnected. To help facilitate the sale of renewable electricity nationally, a system was established that separates renewable electricity generation into two parts: the electricity or electrical energy produced by a renewable generator and the renewable "attributes" of that generation. The renewable attributes or "green" attributes are sold separately as renewable energy certificates (RECs). Only one certificate may be issued for each unit of renewable electricity produced.
A portion of this product is comprised of RECs. With the purchase of RECs, you are buying the renewable attributes (i.e. environmental benefits) of a specific amount and type of renewable energy generation. Your purchase of renewable certificates helps offset conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable generator is located. Your purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits such as reduced global climate change and regional emissions.
The renewable certificates in this product are verified and certified by the Green-e Program. Each supplier of renewable certificates is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate. Please see the Product Content Label for this information. The Green-e Program also verifies that the renewable certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party. For information on the Green-e Program please visit their website, www.green-e.org, or call them toll-free, 1-888-63-GREEN.
