Site footprint
Site footprint: Summary
You have entered energy use data for sites in the following ZIP codes:
Server footprint: 0 tons CO2
Fleet footprint: 0 tons CO2
Travel footprint: 0 tons CO2
Especially for service firms, employee travel can be the biggest source of emissions.
Commute footprint: 0 tons CO2
Calculate emissions for employee transportation to and from work.
Total carbon footprint
What do these numbers mean?
The calculator estimates your emissions in five different categories: building energy use, data center energy use, fleet vehicles, employee travel, and employee commutes.
The source of these emissions differs across categories. For example, data centers use electricity, which typically is generated by coal-powered utilities. Employee travel often involves trips on planes, which burn a tremendous amount of fuel.
The calculator translates these different types of energy use into carbon emissions, the principal cause of global warming. Carbon emissions are measured in metric tons, which are equal to 2,204.6 lbs. For details of how the calculator works, see here.
What does it mean to balance my organization's emissions?
You can lower your organization's carbon emissions through conservation, but you usually can't reduce your footprint to zero. To balance out the emissions you can't reduce, use TerraPass to fund clean energy and carbon reduction projects. These projects result in measurable, verified reductions in carbon emissions, enough to balance out your carbon footprint.
How does my organization's carbon footprint compare to others?
It's difficult to compare across organizations, because businesses vary so greatly in size and activity. If you run a large consumer web site, your primary impact probably comes from your data center. If you have a professional services firm, employee travel may make up your greatest impact.
How can my organization reduce its carbon footprint?
The first step is calculating your footprint and seeing where the biggest impact is. Then work up a conservation plan. Does employee travel account for most of your emissions? See if you can consolidate trips or videoconference. Electricity use? Consider replacing your light bulbs with compact fluorescents and adjusting your thermostat.
