Finding (or creating) those elusive Green Jobs

| November 15, 2005

Editors Note: Please join me in welcoming a new TerraPass team member, Alicia Seiger. Alicia joins us from Wine.com, where she served as Director of Business Development and General Manager of Wine Clubs (see Alicia’s full bio). We asked Alica to take a brief moment to introduce herself, and tell us why she joined TerraPass. Here it is…

Eureka!

I finally found the intersection of environmental concern, business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit. I have been looking all over for it.

I began my search many years ago with a simple pursuit. I wanted to understand how human beings interacted with the natural environment. Specifically, I wanted to answer the question - how can I call myself an environmentalist if I’m not willing to give up things like my car and my razor?

After several interesting but ultimately unfulfilling years at an internet start-up, I decided to take action. I’d get an MBA and reorient myself towards my green business fantasy. I would come away with a shiny new MBA toolbox with which to build my own environmentally focused business for people who like cars and razors.

It took a few more years after grad school, and I didn’t start it from scratch, but I have finally found my holy grail - TerraPass.

The environmentalist in me loves the positive and profound impact TerraPass can have on one of the most critical environmental challenges facing our planet. The businesswoman in me sees the opportunity to build a consumer brand, the power of which can be harnessed to drive change on a grand scale. And finally, the entrepreneur in me is excited to further define and grow TerraPass into the dream anyone who has taken the time to read all the way through this blog post knows is possible.

It feels good to be home.

Do you have any advice for someone seeking a similar 'holy grail' yet lacking job experience? I will be graduating in May and have been trying to find a non-engineering job in the renewable energy industry. Looking back, is there anything you would do differently fresh out of school in your job search/selection?

    Thank you for the advice.

    Hi Jonah,

Thanks for your interest and your comment. I wish I had a magic answer for you.

While experience helps, if you are lacking in that department, it can be useful to signal your interest and commitment to the industry/cause/issue in other ways. Get involved in your local industry association or events that support/address the issues you are seeking to pursue. (One good example is www.rebn.org.)

The key is meeting the right folks, showing commitment and ultimately being in the right place at the right time. If you are dedicated and capable, you will find someone who is willing to let you "learn on the job".

Best of luck with your endeavors!

    Alicia

Would it help to get an MBA from a green MBA program as I have heard about a new Sustainable MBA at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh?
