The greenest monster: buy me some locally grown peanuts and organic crackerjacks

Baseball fans everywhere* agree that the Red Sox are the greatest team in the history of the game and will remain so until the end of time. But now they have another reason to be excited about the franchise:

Red Sox executives announced yesterday that Fenway Park is joining the green revolution through a partnership with a national environmental group aimed at reducing the 95-year-old ballpark’s “ecological footprint.”

For fans, that may mean drinking beer out of plastic cups made with corn starch, finding locally grown, organic foods at the ballpark’s concession stands, and maybe even a new tradition - a fifth inning recycling stretch.

I admit that this news contrasts rather jarringly with my memories of sitting in bleacher seats as a kid and watching drunks from Southie bat around inflatable sex toys in lieu of beach balls. The times, they are a-changing…

Much needed. The amount of trash generated each night at fenway is astounding

Do you know the name of the organization they're working with on their greening projects?

    They're working with NRDC.

I think that this is an excellent move on their part, especially if this sparks the interest of other Sports Teams.

I think what they are doing at Fenway is wonderful, but let's be realistic here. The Yankees are the best there ever was, is and ever will be! Yankees rule!!!!

There are ample opportunities for sports stadiums, teams and fans to clean up their acs. With any luck Fenway will inspire similar action by others. But the greatest baseball team ever? I think the odds are 26:6 against.

I agree. The Boston Red Sox ARE the best loved team in baseball history. And now I have an even better reason to be part of Red Sox Nation!!!

Hooray for Boston! Although I am a Mariners fan I applaud the foresight and innovation of the Boston management. I hope that Safeco field makes this switch soon, as Seattleites usually support similar measures. Thanks for the info.

P.S. Although Seattle has not won ANY championships I feel totally secure in saying that the Yankees obtain their success from some backroom deal with the Devil.

My Beloved Red Sox have once again taken the lead; first with playing "Sweet Caroline" during games and now this.

The Seattle Mariners have "Captain Plastic" to encourage people to recycle plastic bottles. It's been pretty successful (27 tons each year.)

Are they encouraging other teams to do the same or are other teams doing the same on their own?

I personally love taking home a bunch of the big plastic cups from the Metrodome and having Cup Wars with my friends. Two uses are better than one, right?
