Sign the card for Earth DayMake your pledge for Earth Day at signthecard.comAmerican Heritage magazine described the first Earth Day, in 1970, as “one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of democracy,” because a spontaneous response from thousands of schools and local communities saw demonstrations and teach-ins that included over 20 million people. With the re-awakening to environmental issues, Earth Day in the 21st century continues its relevance, although its participants can hardly be described as grassroots any longer. Next week Earth Day will again be celebrated on April 22. We’ve worked together with friends at Squidnote.com, an online greeting card company, to put together a card of environmental pledges, led off by one of our best spokespeople, Ed Begley, Jr.
And the list goes on. You can read more at www.signthecard.com. We’ve had pledges from across the United States, from London, Paris and Colombia. We’ve had an SUV driver promising to sell his car and a hard-green environmentalist promising to install a gray-water system. What’s your Earth Day pledge? Visit www.signthecard.com to make a declaration. And then please pass the link around. I can’t think of many better ways to spread the word about how easy it is to reduce our footprints than to tell others about what we’re doing ourselves. If you’re not yet certain you want to do anything for Earth Day — or perhaps you’re not sure what you could do — have a look at other people’s suggestions and see if you’re inspired to contribute your own. If you do sign the card, feel free to let us know in comments below what your pledge is. Happy pledging — and happy Earth Day! Wouldn’t it be great to establish a grassroots movement of our own for Earth Day 2008? Comments36 comment(s) on this post. Leave your own!

I was married on Earth Day so it's doubley important to me! I pledge to encourage more and more people to do their part, and to go vegetarian.

I am doing as much as I can know but I promise to inform more people and continue to fight on your behalf.

The "polar ice caps are melting" is something to keep in mind when you face trival obstacles in trying to consider the environment. Keep moving forward.

I have stopped purchasing bottled water, and use cloth bags for shopping. Because the city has a recycling program I only have to take what they will not pick up curbside to my recycling center. I have seen my garbage reduced to a small bag weekly.

For our children and theirs, I pledge to be a better visitor to this planet.

I try to decrease my impact on the environment. Increase draught resistant planting, less grass, less watering, using rain water barrels, less trash, less driving (combine trips), less catalogs and junk mail ...... and the list goes on ......

Ride my bike, recycle more, drive less, save water, and hug a tree!

I am teaching my children and small grandchildren the importance of loving our earth in tangible ways. I would love to purchase more foods locally, and will attempt to do so in the coming months.

My pledges may be small, however I believe baby steps can make a huge difference in the overall scheme so I pledge to use my cloth bags more consistently for shopping. I also pledge to not let the water run while brushing my teeth and to not run the washing machine unless I have a full load. I am using energy saving light bulbs and refilling my water bottle from my Brita already so these additions will take me one step further.

I plan to encourage and educate others I'm surrounded by to do their part when it comes to recyling at the office and at home. I also plan to buy locally grown foods more often than usual - they taste better anyway! I can even use my cloth bags for the locally grown produce.

We're continuing our campaign to fund eco-friendly organizations through our commited foundation, The TerraMadre, and sharing thoughts and ideas on our blog at www.theterramadre.org. GREEN IS NOT A NEUTRAL COLOR.

I pledge to completely turn off my cell phone when I go to sleep at night so the battery is not being used for no reason.
I pledge to buy products with high recycled content even if they're currently more expensive.
I pledge to help the children in my life grow up being aware of what they can do to help the earth by being an example to them.

I pledge to walk a whole lot more, recycle all that I can and find a use for stuff that I cant, and SPREAD THE WORD!

I have been running an Eco site for years now. Check it out sometime. I miss your show ED hope to see ya back on the air soon. This year I am going solar and wind power with how to info V-blogs/blogs.

I pledge to research and buy a new energy efficient water heater by the end of the year. This is the last appliance to buy, and then all of our appliances will be energy efficient!

Last year at this time I started picking up at least 10 pieces of trash a day and recycling as much as I can of that-- without really going out of my way, it's been scary easy to do. Some days I exceed my goal number by a factor of 3 to 5.
This year I am really (!) going to hook up my rain barrels at the house.
At my church, a Green Team formed last year is contracting for an energy audit and hope to make some investments in lowering the footprint once prioritized actions can be identified and ranked by payback time. After that, we'll look at offsets (Terrapass has already been mentioned).

I bring my own bags wherever I go, not just the market. My home is turning into a plastic bag free zone.

20 years ago I switched ALL my light bulbs to CFL's and every bulb is still burning while my neighbor is constantly asking me to go to the store and buy and replace her regular bulbs for her. I don't know if it is because she is elderly and therefore skeptical, but I cannot convince her of the practical and environmental benefit of the CFL's. HELP! The other benefit is that I walk to the store to get her bulbs and my groceries so that saves gas. I have the most energy efficient car I could get without it being a hybrid(after Hurricane Katrina we didn't have the luxury of a lot of choice but I've always driven Honda's).I turn off all moniters, chargers, lights, have lo-flow showers, toilets, etc.. It's hard to do more-I live in an apartment.

consider getting a hybrid car, plant a tree for a better tomarrow :) walk/bike more

I'm going to use cloth bags in the grocery & other stores that I take in with me, instead of getting their horrid plastic bags, when I have to purchase products.

for my parents car which is $$ that goes to the process of removing the carbon from the air that your car has emitted.
its like. you put in your car type and it tells you how much carbon it releases per year and how much it is to get rid of it :]
and also my parents might get a new car and ive convinced them into a hybrid XD

I am going to split my home into two zone heating/cooling, and weatherproof for better efficiency.

I add a new resolution each year... so far I bike more, use terrapass, use cloth bags for shopping, recycle everything I can, compost my food waste and plant my own organic veggies and buy from local farm stands in the summer.
This year I'm pledging to buy more clothing from Salvation Army rather than buying new... Recycled clothing!!

I plan to celebrate today (as I do each year) by remembering the very first Earth Day (at which I attended in Riverdale, NY), at which everyone including the then junior Senator Charles "Chuck" Schumer intoned their warning about imminent Global COOLING. Yeah, we were supposed to be in the next Ice Age by 1980. This is documented; I was there and I heard it. But fear not. Even back then, and for reasons 180 degrees opposite to today's cause du jour, America was also depicted as "the enemy."
Now watch how fast this comment is deleted or "responded to." 31 comments before me, not a single divergent opinion on this little leftist totalitarian love fest. Even if you believed in this BS, doesn't it seem a bit odd to you from the natural "bell curve" of responses you see on all other blogs that from 31 responses there isn't a single one that even questions this crap?
Enjoy the nightmare. It's of your own creation. Go ahead, keep wasting your life as puppets of the Left and (surprise!) the OPEC cartel who have kept us from exploring for oil in our own reserves thanks to useful tools like you.

Hi Phil,
We'll leave your tedious comment up for all to view. You seem very angry. Maybe you'll feel better knowing that you scrawled graffiti on someone's web site.
For our part, we'll continue pushing totalitarian concepts such as weather stripping and recycling. We'll also continue to push leftist conspiracies such as...science. (A conspiracy support by such famous leftists as Newt Gingrich.) It's all in a day's work.
