Reducing energy usage — Step #1: measure itNow you can see your home’s electricity costs in real timePete: I can show you how to reduce your home electricity bill by up to 20% It’s the idea behind the PowerCost monitor that we’ve just added to the TerraPass green store. It watches your home’s electricity meter for you and translates your energy usage into real dollars and cents. The PowerCost monitor comes in two parts. The first, a sensor, is attached to your electricity meter. It works on all standard residential meters and is easily installed (no electrician required). The sensor sends a wireless signal to a small display unit. You can put this anywhere in the house. The unit can be configured with your local electricity rates (it can even cope with differing billing systems, including tiered rate and peak/off-peak rates) to show you the amount of money your energy use is costing you at any one time. Watch it get cheaper as you turn off the unwanted items around the house…and that’s how you save. The average annual Californian residential electricity bill is a little over $1,000. If you can use the PowerCost monitor to cut this by 13%, it will pay for itself inside a year. I’ll install and review the PowerCost monitor in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, here’s a quote from TerraPass customer David from Boston, MA:
Oh — and shipping’s free until the end of the month (along with all other orders over $75). So buy the PowerCost monitor today and start saving over the electricity-intensive summer season! Comments

This is fantastic. I just watched an episode of Ask This Old House and they talked about it. I wanted it. Forgot about it. Now here you are talking about it!!!
Thanks

Has anyone actually purchased one of these? I see a lot of products like this, but I'd like to make sure they work before I purchase. Thanks

@Macky - two quick things:
1. Read the review posted by David on our product page.
2. All TerraPass purchases have a full 30-day money back guarantee in addition to all manufacturers warranties. So if you're interested, but skeptical, try it out!
Pete.

What I really need is one of these that hooks up to the natural gas meeter! That's the real money hog in my house.

Sorry to ask stupid questions, but -- why? It is not like this device is telling you what is using up your electricity, right? It tells you that you might be using more electricity now than a few minutes ago (I assume?), but I fail to see how that would be remarkably useful. Interesting information, yes, but that information will not directly yield less power use.
What is far more useful is a device like Kill-A-Watt (which I believe you sell) which can tell you the electricity use of individual items and allow you to adjust use accordingly. We have been using this for a few years now, and every year we manage to lower our electricity bill further.

How will this work with my solar array? Would the information be useful during the day by showing me how much I'm not using or only at night when I'm drawing from the grid?

i just called the company after watching the installation video. this product will not ork if you have a digital time-of-day meter (used w. solar arrays, can run backwards/forwards).
Meant for the rotating disk meter, some digitals, but not reversibles.

I have one of these on my house. It's sensor is mounted on my digital meter and it works great! The reason that it is useful is that it not only tells you what the hole house is using but because it updates so frequently when I turn on an appliance i see the $ or kw change within about 15 - 20 seconds. Then you do the simple math to see what that appliance costs. I've come to realize the energy hogs and phantom loads in my house saving us big time!
