Pictures of monkeys

Adam Stein | September 24, 2007

If you’re wondering with that deal is with the monkey monkey-like thing in the previous post, TNR is running a series of totally awesome monkey simian photos by Jill Greenberg in the same issues at the Nordhaus & Shellenberger essay.

I’m not sure I’m technically supposed to reproduce them here, but the PR person at TNR did email us a link, so presumably they want the publicity. Being a sucker for monkeys simians, I took the bait. We’ll take them down if anyone complains. And if you like them, click through. There are dozens more.

These are fabulous pictures, Adam, but are largely of apes, not monkeys :-)

Oh, man. I'm busted. OK, I'm going to go with simians, until I get called out for that too.

I strongly suspect that these are captive primates. I don't see any hint of a natural setting around any of them. This makes me depressed. Email me if you'd like some photos of primates in the wild. Or, come to my blog. There are some in my travel write-ups. I'll be adding more over time.

I've got photos of apes (chimps and mountain gorillas) and many species of monkeys. All of my photos will be in the wild.

Is it just me, or are these pictures photo-shopped and airbrushed to death?

I figured they were computer-generated, or maybe paintings of primates. They look a bit too two-dimensional and fake to make a real connection. If these are real primates, somebody clearly wanted to make them look cute and charming, rather than intimidating.
