What about renting a hybrid car when you go on a trip? Great way to save some money and reduce your footprint when away from home. Good site for locating people who rent hybrid cars is www.hybrid-rental-car.com
Dunno how effective these are on the highway. Seems hybrids shine in the stop and go of city driving where the energy lost to braking is captured and stored in the batteries.
Enterprise rent-a-car has a program where you can sign up to use a Prius in town. (They are testing it here in St. Louis) The program is called WeCar and there are several Prius parked in downtown STL and I believe one can "join" and schedule a car for personal use and return it to the on-street parking.
Seems that would be a more effective use of the hybrid technology, in urban driving, than the over the road family vacation.
I think for any such solution to really be a hit with the average consumer, one would have to demonstrate that the cost of the rental will be more than offset by the energy costs saved.
Right now, even at $4/gallon, I don't think it's a winner for the family budget.
