Mixed review. Flawed & fragile ... although brilliant idea, 02/01/2009
Reviewer: Robert Wilson (Washington)

I bought two of these and both were damaged within 24 hours of use. Be warned: This is not an iPod, and is not durable enough for casual walkaround use. Permit me to warn potential buyers of the virtues & flaws of the Trevor Baylis Wind-up MP3 Eco-Player:

(1) On my first Eco-Player, the crank broke and is no longer charging manually. This was not a result of abuse or overly vigorous cranking.

(2) On my second Eco-Player, the input jack is fragile enough that using the device while carrying it in your pocket offset or damaged the input jack. In other words, the earphones no longer produce steady sound in both ears unless you push hard against the input jack.

The Eco-Player is a brilliant idea, and if used very, very carefully (as if the device were utterly fragile) it may serve its owner well. There are so many good features -- FM, video, text, MP3, flashlight, and especially the crank manual charge -- that it seems harsh to complain.

However...

There are many other issues with the Eco-Player that I have found flawed:

(a) Creating playlists is difficult and only possible when loading the device with your computer.

(b) The system frequently crashes.

(c) Using the push buttons too fast or in the wrong order will cause a system crash.

(d) Fast-forward is very, very slow and difficult -- about 4 minutes to fast forward an hour of MP3 time, so if you are listening to a podcast of over an hour's length, you have a long wait. Rewind is twice as slow -- not an exaggeration.

(e) There is no feature that holds your place when a podcast is stopped. In other words, if you do not pause during a podcast/playback, you will lose your place and you must fast-forward, which is very inconvenient due to the slowness of fast-forward.

(f) Menu access is not possible during playback.

(g) External charge (trickle charge) is very slow. Leaving the device plugged into the USB port for a day will not fully charge the battery.

If you find the crank charging feature as valuable as I do, in theory, the Eco-Player is an invaluable device.

However, there are very many flaws -- most especially the durability -- which render its actual value mixed.

Although I have returned both devices on warranty, I have not yet gotten word or had my devices repaired or returned. No review on this facet of service yet.

Baylis Eco Media Player, 07/16/2008
Reviewer: Patrick Leclerc (Québec, Canada)

This is not your ordinary mp3 player. Unlike the widely used iPod, you have FM Radio, a built-in speaker, line-in + FM radio + microphone recording, LED flashlight, cellphone charger and self-recharging. The interface is reminiscent of Windows 3.1 and 95 in the sense that all of the graphics are very blocky and everything is slow to load. Additionally, the FM-radio reception is weak for anyone living outside of a metropolitan area and songs ONLY appear in the order you saved them, not alphabetically. The final cons I find are the low video playback quality and chunky picture slide show feature. Set aside the blocky interface, this is an EXCELLENT device. The first thing you realise is the impressive sound quality, I've always felt that all digital devices sound sensibly the same, but the Baylis has a certain "je ne sais quoi" that gives it a unique crystal clear audio texture (there are even multiple equalizer settings).
The Eco Media player does much more than many other electronics in its class, the line-in feature allows me to transfer any of my cassettes, vinyls and 8-Tracks (that's right) directly to the player at a higher sound quality than when I use my computer, the process is much more straight forward and the results are astounding! If you're a musician (as in my case), the quality is surprisingly good for recording piano, but the Trumpet sounds like a joke. If you're looking for high-quality audio recording (from the microphone), I highly recommend a portable MiniDisc recorder/player. Although the built-in flashlight may seem like a gimmick, it simply isn't, the light projected is VERY powerful and radiant and can even be used as a strobe light with enough creativity. In all, this is a cleverly designed device that should please all audiophiles alike and MacGyver. Especially with its comparatively low 200$ price tag, I couldn't have made a better choice, even my friends find it wicked!
Luckily, the Trevor Baylis website puts firmware upgrades as they become available so the slow response time and chunky graphics may soon be a thing of the past!

Bayliss Mp3 Player, 06/19/2008
Reviewer: carmela (Southern California)

For my birthday I wanted the Trevor Bayliss EP-MX71 Eco Media MP3 Player. I loved the idea that you can re-charge the internal battery by winding it for just two minutes! Comes in VERY handy when camping or taking the bus to work and the charge runs out! I also love the versatility: built-in LED flashlight; SD drive for extra file storage; FM radio; externa speaker; voice record...it's amazing! In many ways it is an excellent product, and my only disappointment with it is that I've been spoiled after years of owning an iPod which plays mp4 and with the scroll feathre makes it easy to locate and play files. The one thing the iPod DOESN'T have is a battery that lasts or can be crank charged. I have converted many mp4 files to mp3 and gotten over that hurdle and resigned to listening to my music in the order uploaded to the Bayliss. The price of the Bayliss is wonderful, considering all its features especially when compared to other mp3 players. I recommend it!
